Australia’s vehicle sales took a dip in April 2025, but the Toyota HiLux made a strong comeback — reclaiming its place as the country’s best-selling vehicle. According to the latest VFACTS report, 90,614 new vehicles were registered across 23 selling days, marking a 6.8% decline year-on-year.

In a tightly contested month:
- Toyota HiLux topped the chart with 4212 registrations
- Ford Ranger followed closely at 4031 units
- Toyota RAV4 rounded out the top three with 3808 registrations
The battle for fourth was equally intense, with the Ford Everest (2234 units) narrowly beating the Toyota Prado (2233 units) by just one vehicle.

Fuel Type Trends & FBT Impact
Australians still favour petrol and diesel vehicles, but plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sales declined significantly. The drop follows the removal of Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemptions for PHEVs — a shift that has affected affordability.
Meanwhile, EVs and standard hybrids saw modest growth, signalling a continued but cautious shift toward electrification.
Australia’s Vehicle Preferences
SUVs remain the top choice for Aussie drivers, followed by light commercial vehicles (like utes). Passenger vehicle sales continue to decline, falling 27.4% year-on-year, reinforcing a long-term trend away from sedans and hatchbacks.
